1 Corinthians 8

1 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
1 Περὶ δὲ τῶν εἰδωλοθύτων, οἴδαμεν ὅτι πάντες γνῶσιν ἔχομεν. Ἡ γνῶσις φυσιοῖ, ἡ δὲ ἀγάπη οἰκοδομεῖ.

if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing

3 But if any man love God, the same is known of him

3 εἰ δέ τις ἀγαπᾷ τὸν θεόν, οὗτος ἔγνωσται ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ.
4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other

4 Περὶ τῆς βρώσεως οὖν τῶν εἰδωλοθύτων, οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὐδὲν εἴδωλον ἐν κόσμῳ, καὶ ὅτι οὐδεὶς θεὸς ἕτερος

5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
5 Καὶ γὰρ εἴπερ εἰσὶν λεγόμενοι θεοί, εἴτε ἐν οὐρανῷ εἴτε ἐπὶ γῆς· ὥσπερ εἰσὶν θεοὶ πολλοί, καὶ κύριοι πολλοί·

7 Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience

of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
7 Ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἐν πᾶσιν ἡ γνῶσις· τινὲς δὲ τῇ συνειδήσει

τοῦ εἰδώλου ἕως ἄρτι

ὡς εἰδωλόθυτον ἐσθίουσιν, καὶ ἡ συνείδησις αὐτῶν ἀσθενὴς οὖσα μολύνεται.
8 But meat commendeth us not

8 Βρῶμα δὲ ἡμᾶς οὐ παρίστησιν
WH παραστήσει
τῷ θεῷ· οὔτε γὰρ ἐὰν φάγωμεν περισσεύομεν, οὔτε ἐὰν
WH ἐὰν
μὴ φάγωμεν ὑστερούμεθα. [+]
WH οὔτε ἐὰν φάγωμεν, περισσεύομεν.
9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
9 Βλέπετε δὲ μήπως
WH μή πως
ἡ ἐξουσία ὑμῶν αὕτη πρόσκομμα γένηται τοῖς ἀσθενοῦσιν
WH ἀσθενέσιν
.
10 For if any man see thee which hast

knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
10 Ἐὰν γάρ τις ἴδῃ σε
WH [σὲ]
τὸν ἔχοντα γνῶσιν ἐν εἰδωλείῳ
WH εἰδωλίῳ
κατακείμενον, οὐχὶ ἡ συνείδησις αὐτοῦ ἀσθενοῦς ὄντος οἰκοδομηθήσεται εἰς τὸ τὰ εἰδωλόθυτα ἐσθίειν;
11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish,
ℵ ⟨For by thy knowledge he that is weak perisheth, the brother⟩; A ⟨Therefore by thy knowledge he that is weak perisheth, the brother⟩; B ⟨For by knowledge he that is weak perisheth, the brother⟩
for whom Christ died?
11 Καὶ ἀπολεῖται
WH ἀπόλλυται γὰρ
ὁ ἀσθενῶν ἀδελφὸς ἐπὶ
WH ἐν
τῇ σῇ γνώσει, [+]
WH ὁ ἀδελφὸς
δι’ ὃν χριστὸς ἀπέθανεν;
12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
12 Οὕτως δὲ ἁμαρτάνοντες εἰς τοὺς ἀδελφούς, καὶ τύπτοντες αὐτῶν τὴν συνείδησιν ἀσθενοῦσαν, εἰς χριστὸν ἁμαρτάνετε.
13 Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.
13 Διόπερ εἰ βρῶμα σκανδαλίζει τὸν ἀδελφόν μου, οὐ μὴ φάγω κρέα εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, ἵνα μὴ τὸν ἀδελφόν μου σκανδαλίσω.
