1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God
1 Ἀρχὴ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου Ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ, υἱοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ.
2 As it is written in the prophets
ℵB ⟨Esaias the prophet⟩, Behold, I send
ℵ ⟨will send⟩my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee
2 ¶ Ὡς
WH Καθὼςγέγραπται ἐν τοῖς προφήταις,
WH τῷ Ἠσαίᾳ τῷ προφήτῃἸδού, ἐγὼ
WH omitἀποστέλλω τὸν ἄγγελόν μου πρὸ προσώπου σου, ὃς κατασκευάσει τὴν ὁδόν σου ἔμπροσθέν σου.
3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
3 Φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, Ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδὸν κυρίου· εὐθείας ποιεῖτε τὰς τρίβους αὐτοῦ.
ℵ* ⟨And John⟩did baptize in the wilderness
ℵB ⟨the Baptist was in the wilderness⟩, and preach
B ⟨preaching⟩the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
4 Ἐγένετο Ἰωάννης
WH Ἰωάνης ὁβαπτίζων ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, καὶ
WH omitκηρύσσων βάπτισμα μετανοίας εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν.
5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judæa, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized
ℵ* ⟨they of Jerusalem were all baptized⟩of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
5 Καὶ ἐξεπορεύετο πρὸς αὐτὸν πᾶσα ἡ Ἰουδαία χώρα, καὶ οἱ Ἱεροσολυμῖται
WH Ἰεροσολυμεῖται πάντες, καὶ ἐβαπτίζοντο πάντες
WH ὑπ’ αὐτοῦἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ποταμῷ ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ,
WH omitἐξομολογούμενοι τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν.
6 And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
WH καὶἮν δὲ

WH Ἰωάνηςἐνδεδυμένος τρίχας καμήλου, καὶ ζώνην δερματίνην περὶ τὴν ὀσφὺν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐσθίων
WH ἔσθωνἀκρίδας καὶ μέλι ἄγριον.
7 And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.
7 Καὶ ἐκήρυσσεν, λέγων, Ἔρχεται ὁ ἰσχυρότερός μου ὀπίσω μου
WH [μου], οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἱκανὸς κύψας λῦσαι τὸν ἱμάντα τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτοῦ.
8 I indeed
ℵB omithave baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you
ℵ* omitwith the Holy Ghost.
8 Ἐγὼ μὲν
WH omitἐβάπτισα ὑμᾶς ἐν
WH omitὕδατι· αὐτὸς δὲ βαπτίσει ὑμᾶς ἐν
WH omitπνεύματι ἁγίῳ.
B omitit came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan

9 ¶ Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις, ἦλθεν Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ Ναζαρὲτ τῆς Γαλιλαίας, καὶ ἐβαπτίσθη ὑπὸ Ἰωάννου

10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending

11 And there came
ℵ* omita voice from heaven, , Thou art my beloved Son, in whom

12 And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness.
12 ¶ Καὶ εὐθὺς τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτὸν ἐκβάλλει εἰς τὴν ἔρημον.
13 And he was there

15 And saying,
ℵ* omit; ℵ2A ⟨Saying,⟩The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

WH [καὶ λέγων]ὅτι Πεπλήρωται ὁ καιρός, καὶ ἤγγικεν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ· μετανοεῖτε, καὶ πιστεύετε ἐν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ.
16 Now as he walked
ℵB ⟨And as he passed along⟩by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother
ℵB ⟨the brother of Simon⟩casting a net
ℵB ⟨ here and there⟩; A ⟨a net here and there⟩into the sea: for they were fishers.
16 ¶ Περιπατῶν δὲ
WH Καὶ παράγωνπαρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἶδεν Σίμωνα καὶ Ἀνδρέαν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ τοῦ
WH omitΣίμωνος βάλλοντας ἀμφίβληστρον
WH ἀμφιβάλλονταςἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ· ἦσαν γὰρ ἁλιεῖς.
17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
17 Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Δεῦτε ὀπίσω μου, καὶ ποιήσω ὑμᾶς γενέσθαι ἁλιεῖς
18 And straightway they forsook their
ℵB ⟨the⟩nets, and followed him.
18 Καὶ εὐθέως
WH εὐθὺςἀφέντες τὰ δίκτυα αὐτῶν,
WH omitἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ.
19 And when he had gone a little
ℵ* omitfarther thence
B omit, he saw James the of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.
19 Καὶ προβὰς ἐκεῖθεν
WH omitὀλίγον, εἶδεν Ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου, καὶ Ἰωάννην
WH Ἰωάνηντὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ καταρτίζοντας τὰ δίκτυα.
20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.
20 Καὶ εὐθέως
WH εὐθὺςἐκάλεσεν αὐτούς· καὶ ἀφέντες τὸν πατέρα αὐτῶν Ζεβεδαῖον ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ μετὰ τῶν μισθωτῶν ἀπῆλθον ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ.
21 And they went into Capernaum
ℵB ⟨Capharnaum⟩; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught
ℵ ⟨he taught in the synagogue⟩.
21 ¶ Καὶ εἰσπορεύονται εἰς Καπερναούμ·
WH Καφαρναούμ.καὶ εὐθέως
WH εὐθὺςτοῖς σάββασιν εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὴν συναγωγήν, ἐδίδασκεν.
22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
22 Καὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ· ἦν γὰρ διδάσκων αὐτοὺς ὡς ἐξουσίαν ἔχων, καὶ οὐχ ὡς οἱ γραμματεῖς.
ℵB ⟨And straightway⟩there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
23 Καὶ [+]
WH εὐθὺςἦν ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ αὐτῶν ἄνθρωπος ἐν πνεύματι ἀκαθάρτῳ, καὶ ἀνέκραξεν,
24 Saying, Let alone;
ℵ*B omitwhat have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I
ℵ ⟨we⟩know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
24 λέγων, Ἔα,
WH omitτί ἡμῖν καὶ σοί, Ἰησοῦ Ναζαρηνέ; Ἦλθες ἀπολέσαι ἡμᾶς; Οἶδά σε τίς εἶ, ὁ ἅγιος τοῦ θεοῦ.
25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying,
ℵ*A* omitHold thy peace, and come out of him.
25 Καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, λέγων,
WH [λέγων]Φιμώθητι, καὶ ἔξελθε ἐξ αὐτοῦ.
26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
26 Καὶ σπαράξαν αὐτὸν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἀκάθαρτον καὶ κράξαν
WH φωνῆσανφωνῇ μεγάλῃ, ἐξῆλθεν ἐξ αὐτοῦ.
27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves
ℵ omit, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits
ℵB ⟨What is this? A new doctrine with authority! He commandeth even the unclean spirits⟩, and they do obey him.
27 Καὶ ἐθαμβήθησαν πάντες
WH ἅπαντες, ὥστε συζητεῖν πρὸς ἑαυτούς,
WH συνζητεῖν αὐτοὺςλέγοντας, Τί ἐστιν τοῦτο; Τίς ἡ
WH omitδιδαχὴ ἡ
WH omitκαινὴ αὕτη, ὅτι
WH omitκατ’ ἐξουσίαν καὶ τοῖς πνεύμασιν
WH πνεύμασιτοῖς ἀκαθάρτοις ἐπιτάσσει, καὶ ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ;
28 And immediately
ℵ* omithis fame spread abroad
ℵ2B ⟨abroad every where⟩throughout all the region round about Galilee
WH ΚαὶἘξῆλθεν δὲ
WH omitἡ ἀκοὴ αὐτοῦ εὐθὺς [+]
WH πανταχοῦεἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον τῆς Γαλιλαίας.
29 And forthwith, when they were
B ⟨he was⟩come out of the synagogue, they
B ⟨he⟩entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
29 ¶ Καὶ εὐθέως
WH εὐθὺςἐκ τῆς συναγωγῆς ἐξελθόντες, ἦλθον
WH ἦλθανεἰς τὴν οἰκίαν Σίμωνος καὶ Ἀνδρέου, μετὰ Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωάννου
30 But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.
30 Ἡ δὲ πενθερὰ Σίμωνος κατέκειτο πυρέσσουσα, καὶ εὐθέως
WH εὐθὺςλέγουσιν αὐτῷ περὶ αὐτῆς·
31 And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately
ℵB omitthe fever left her, and she ministered unto them.
31 καὶ προσελθὼν ἤγειρεν αὐτήν, κρατήσας τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῆς·
WH omitκαὶ ἀφῆκεν αὐτὴν ὁ πυρετὸς εὐθέως,
WH omitκαὶ διηκόνει αὐτοῖς.
32 And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.
32 ¶ Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης, ὅτε ἔδυ
WH ἔδυσενὁ ἥλιος, ἔφερον πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας καὶ τοὺς δαιμονιζομένους·
33 And all the city was gathered together at the door.
33 καὶ [+]
WH ἦν ὅληἡ πόλις ὅλη
WH omitἐπισυνηγμένη ἦν
WH omitπρὸς τὴν θύραν.
34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases
ℵ* omit, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him

34 Καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν πολλοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας ποικίλαις νόσοις, καὶ δαιμόνια πολλὰ ἐξέβαλεν, καὶ οὐκ ἤφιεν λαλεῖν τὰ δαιμόνια, ὅτι ᾔδεισαν αὐτόν. [+]

35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed

WH ἔννυχαλίαν ἀναστὰς ἐξῆλθεν, καὶ ἀπῆλθεν

36 And Simon and they that were with him followed after him.
36 Καὶ κατεδίωξαν
WH κατεδίωξεναὐτὸν ὁ
WH omitΣίμων καὶ οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ·
37 And when they had
ℵB ⟨they⟩found him, they said
ℵB ⟨and say⟩unto him, All seek for thee.
37 καὶ εὑρόντες
WH εὗροναὐτὸν [+]
WH καὶλέγουσιν αὐτῷ ὅτι Πάντες σε
WH omitζητοῦσιν. [+]
38 And he said unto them, Let us go into
ℵB ⟨elsewhere into⟩the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.
38 Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, Ἄγωμεν [+]
WH ἀλλαχοῦεἰς τὰς ἐχομένας κωμοπόλεις, ἵνα καὶ ἐκεῖ κηρύξω· εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ ἐξελήλυθα
39 And he preached
ℵ* ⟨came to preach⟩; ℵ2B ⟨came preaching⟩in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.
39 Καὶ ἦν
WH ἦλθενκηρύσσων ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς
WH εἰς τὰς συναγωγὰςαὐτῶν εἰς ὅλην τὴν Γαλιλαίαν, καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια ἐκβάλλων.
40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and
B omit; ℵ ⟨and kneeling down, and⟩saying unto him, If thou wilt
B ⟨Lord, if thou wilt⟩, thou canst make me clean.
40 ¶ Καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτὸν λεπρός, παρακαλῶν αὐτὸν καὶ γονυπετῶν αὐτόν, καὶ
WH [καὶ γονυπετῶν]λέγων αὐτῷ ὅτι Ἐὰν θέλῃς, δύνασαί με καθαρίσαι.
41 And Jesus
ℵB ⟨he⟩, moved with compassion, put forth hand, and touched him, and saith unto him
ℵ omit, I will; be thou clean.
41 Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς
WH καὶσπλαγχνισθείς, ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα, [+]
WH αὐτοῦἥψατο αὐτοῦ,
WH omitκαὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, Θέλω, καθαρίσθητι.
42 And as soon as he had spoken,
ℵB omitimmediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.
42 Καὶ εἰπόντος αὐτοῦ εὐθέως
WH εὐθὺςἀπῆλθεν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ἡ λέπρα, καὶ ἐκαθαρίσθη
43 And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;
43 Καὶ ἐμβριμησάμενος αὐτῷ, εὐθέως
WH εὐθὺςἐξέβαλεν αὐτόν,
44 And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any
ℵA ⟨to no⟩man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
44 καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, Ὅρα μηδενὶ μηδὲν εἴπῃς· ἀλλ’
WH ἀλλὰὕπαγε, σεαυτὸν δεῖξον τῷ ἱερεῖ, καὶ προσένεγκε περὶ τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ σου ἃ προσέταξεν Μωσῆς,
WH Μωυσῆςεἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς.
45 But he went out, and began to publish much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.
45 Ὁ δὲ ἐξελθὼν ἤρξατο κηρύσσειν πολλὰ καὶ διαφημίζειν τὸν λόγον, ὥστε μηκέτι αὐτὸν δύνασθαι φανερῶς εἰς πόλιν εἰσελθεῖν, ἀλλ’
WH ἀλλὰἔξω ἐν
WH ἐπ’ἐρήμοις τόποις ἦν
WH [ἦν]· καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτὸν πανταχόθεν
