Acts 7

1 Then said the high priest, Are these things so?
1 Εἶπεν δὲ ὁ ἀρχιερεύς, Εἰ ἄρα

2 And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
2 Ὁ δὲ ἔφη, ¶ Ἄνδρες ἀδελφοὶ καὶ πατέρες, ἀκούσατε. Ὁ θεὸς τῆς δόξης ὤφθη τῷ πατρὶ ἡμῶν Ἀβραὰμ ὄντι ἐν τῇ Μεσοποταμίᾳ, πρὶν ἢ κατοικῆσαι αὐτὸν ἐν Χαρράν,
3 And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
3 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν, Ἔξελθε ἐκ τῆς γῆς σου καὶ ἐκ

4 Then came he out of the land of the Chaldæans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.
4 Τότε ἐξελθὼν ἐκ γῆς Χαλδαίων κατῴκησεν ἐν Χαρράν· κἀκεῖθεν, μετὰ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ, μετῴκισεν αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν γῆν ταύτην εἰς ἣν ὑμεῖς νῦν κατοικεῖτε·
5 And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
5 καὶ οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ κληρονομίαν ἐν αὐτῇ, οὐδὲ βῆμα ποδός· καὶ ἐπηγγείλατο δοῦναι αὐτῷ εἰς κατάσχεσιν αὐτήν, καὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτόν, οὐκ ὄντος αὐτῷ τέκνου.
6 And God spake on this wise, That his seed should
ℵ ⟨unto him, Thy seed shall⟩
 sojourn in a strange land; and that they should
ℵ ⟨they shall⟩
 bring them
ℵ ⟨it⟩
 into bondage, and entreat them
ℵ ⟨it⟩
 evil four hundred years.
6 Ἐλάλησεν δὲ οὕτως ὁ θεός, ὅτι ἔσται τὸ σπέρμα αὐτοῦ πάροικον ἐν γῇ ἀλλοτρίᾳ, καὶ δουλώσουσιν αὐτὸ καὶ κακώσουσιν, ἔτη τετρακόσια.
7 And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.
7 Καὶ τὸ ἔθνος, ᾧ ἐὰν δουλεύσωσιν,

 κρινῶ ἐγώ, εἶπεν

8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth

 day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.
8 Καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ διαθήκην περιτομῆς· καὶ οὕτως ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰσαάκ, καὶ περιέτεμεν αὐτὸν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ὀγδόῃ· καὶ ὁ

9 And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
9 Καὶ οἱ πατριάρχαι ζηλώσαντες τὸν Ἰωσὴφ ἀπέδοντο εἰς Αἴγυπτον· καὶ ἦν ὁ θεὸς μετ’ αὐτοῦ,
10 And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all

10 καὶ ἐξείλετο
WH ἐξείλατο
 αὐτὸν ἐκ πασῶν τῶν θλίψεων αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ χάριν καὶ σοφίαν ἐναντίον Φαραὼ βασιλέως Αἰγύπτου, καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτὸν ἡγούμενον ἐπ’ Αἴγυπτον καὶ ὅλον τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ.
11 Now there came a dearth over all the land of

12 But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.
12 Ἀκούσας δὲ Ἰακὼβ ὄντα σῖτα ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ,

 ἐξαπέστειλεν τοὺς πατέρας ἡμῶν πρῶτον.
13 And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's

 kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.
13 Καὶ ἐν τῷ δευτέρῳ ἀνεγνωρίσθη

14 Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his

17 But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn

 to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

18 Till another king arose

19 The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our

 fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds

23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:
24 Καὶ ἰδών τινα ἀδικούμενον, ἠμύνατο καὶ ἐποίησεν ἐκδίκησιν τῷ καταπονουμένῳ, πατάξας τὸν Αἰγύπτιον·
25 For he supposed his
ℵB ⟨the⟩
 brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.
25 ἐνόμιζεν δὲ συνιέναι τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ

26 And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
26 Τῇ τε ἐπιούσῃ ἡμέρᾳ ὤφθη αὐτοῖς μαχομένοις, καὶ συνήλασεν

 αὐτοὺς εἰς εἰρήνην, εἰπών, Ἄνδρες, ἀδελφοί ἐστε ὑμεῖς·

27 But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?
27 Ὁ δὲ ἀδικῶν τὸν πλησίον ἀπώσατο αὐτόν, εἰπών, Τίς σε κατέστησεν ἄρχοντα καὶ δικαστὴν ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς

;
28 Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?
28 Μὴ ἀνελεῖν με σὺ θέλεις, ὃν τρόπον ἀνεῖλες χθὲς

 τὸν Αἰγύπτιον;
29 Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.
29 Ἔφυγεν δὲ Μωσῆς

 ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τούτῳ, καὶ ἐγένετο πάροικος ἐν γῇ Μαδιάμ, οὗ ἐγέννησεν υἱοὺς δύο.
30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord

 ᾧ ἕστηκας γῆ ἁγία ἐστίν.
34 I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
34 Ἰδὼν εἶδον τὴν κάκωσιν τοῦ λαοῦ μου τοῦ ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ, καὶ τοῦ στεναγμοῦ αὐτῶν

35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge

36 He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

39 To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,

WH ἀλλὰ
 ἀπώσαντο, καὶ ἐστράφησαν τῇ καρδίᾳ
WH ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις
 αὐτῶν εἰς Αἴγυπτον,
40 Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which
ℵ ⟨the man which⟩
 brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
40 εἰπόντες τῷ Ἀαρών, Ποίησον ἡμῖν θεοὺς οἳ προπορεύσονται ἡμῶν· ὁ γὰρ Μωσῆς

 οὗτος, ὃς ἐξήγαγεν ἡμᾶς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, οὐκ οἴδαμεν τί γέγονεν

41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
41 Καὶ ἐμοσχοποίησαν ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις, καὶ ἀνήγαγον θυσίαν τῷ εἰδώλῳ, καὶ εὐφραίνοντο ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις τῶν χειρῶν αὐτῶν.
42 Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness

43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan

, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
43 Καὶ ἀνελάβετε τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ Μολόχ, καὶ τὸ ἄστρον τοῦ θεοῦ ὑμῶν Ῥεμφάν

 fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.
44 Ἡ σκηνὴ τοῦ μαρτυρίου ἦν τοῖς πατράσιν ἡμῶν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, καθὼς διετάξατο ὁ λαλῶν τῷ Μωσῇ,

 ποιῆσαι αὐτὴν κατὰ τὸν τύπον ὃν ἑωράκει.
45 Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;
45 Ἣν καὶ εἰσήγαγον διαδεξάμενοι οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν μετὰ Ἰησοῦ ἐν τῇ κατασχέσει τῶν ἐθνῶν, ὧν ἐξῶσεν ὁ θεὸς ἀπὸ προσώπου τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν, ἕως τῶν ἡμερῶν Δαυίδ

46 Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God

47 But Solomon built him an house.

48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples

 made with hands; as saith the prophet,

49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?

 and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
51 Σκληροτράχηλοι καὶ ἀπερίτμητοι τῇ καρδίᾳ

52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
52 Τίνα τῶν προφητῶν οὐκ ἐδίωξαν οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν; Καὶ ἀπέκτειναν τοὺς προκαταγγείλαντας περὶ τῆς ἐλεύσεως τοῦ δικαίου, οὗ νῦν ὑμεῖς προδόται καὶ φονεῖς γεγένησθε·
